The origin of Vastu Shastra – Maya Danava 

The roots of Vastu Shastra go way back in time than we could even imagine i.e. around 3000 B.C. The first known expert of this ancient science was Maya Danava, who is the founder of India’s sacred architecture. Maya Danava has a significant role to play in designing spaces that reflect the correct balance of vastu – where spirituality meets practicality. 

The legend of Vastu Purusha

Long ago, a terrifying demon was created by just a single  drop of Lord Shiva’s sweat. He was giant in size and uncontrollable in power. Wherever he went, he spread fear, chaos, destruction across the world.  His presence was so overwhelming that the entire world trembled under his weight.

And, to end this havoc, all gods came together and decided to save the world by taking some action against this demon. They managed to subdue him by pinning him down. Each god was assigned a specific position which is called “Pada” in this cosmic arrangement. Lord Brahma took the position in the center.   While, the other 32 deities got positioned in the surrounding squares based on their significance.  In this subdued arrangement, the demon, Vastu Purusha, was shown with his head facing NorthEast and his feet towards SouthWest.  And, this divine arrangement is called Vastu Purusha Mandala – A sacred diagram that became the foundation of Vastu Shastra.

Vastu Shastra uses this principle of mandala diagram to guide the architecture of any building, ensuring not to displease Vastu Purusha. 

In this way, Vastu Shastra blends with science and spirituality. The Vastu Purusha mandala is like a blueprint that connects buildings with cosmic forces whereas Purusha means the energy or the cosmic man. And, this mandala is a chart of the universe. And, following these principles, we can design spaces that align with these universal energies and bring harmony into our lives.
